Each year KnightKrawler participates in the FIRST Robotics booth / competition at the MN State Fair (during the two weeks leading up to Labor Day). This involves three things:
- robot demonstrations,
- walking in the parade, and
- submitting our most recent robot for judging.
Robot Demonstrations: Our team will be paired with two other teams and will provide information about FIRST, demonstrate our robot’s abilities, and closely supervise kids who choose to drive the robot.
- The main volunteer contributions are in the Behind The Scenes (BTS) efforts.
- Before the day of the event volunteer(s) assist students in making sure they have all the tools, batteries, laptops needed to run the robot (or fix it if/when something breaks!)
- A volunteer coordinates purchasing tickets for students–they will later be reimbursed by 2052 or the State Fair–and distributing tickets to students day of.
- Usually there are three volunteers who accompany students to the Fair and this also usually involves student and robot transportation. which requires pulling a trailer.
- Volunteers create a schedule of what students will be in the Education building at what times, ensuring everyone has time to take a break and go get lunch.
- In the past, the team has been asked to be at the Education building at 9am, and demos usually last till 4pm.
Walking in the parade: Volunteers make sure kids are back at the building to get the robot on the robot cart (from competitions) and ready to walk in the parade. Volunteers talk with the event coordinator on the MN State Fair’s end to find out the location and time of staging for the parade. Encourage students to wave, cheer, and to remember that we are in uniform and representing the team!
